The shortlist
Tender Smokehouse. A quarter-century in Texas food service behind the pit, right out on US-380 in Aubrey. This is a make-the-drive brisket, not a grab-lunch one.
Bebo’s and Kathy’s Cafe. Burgers with names — the Bebo, and the Bozilla if you’re feeling brave — plus live music, on 377 in Pilot Point. A local institution with an actual personality.
Nick’s Italian Restaurant. Family-owned in Pilot Point, running heirloom recipes traced all the way back to the Rossini Brothers of Queens Village, NY. The pasta’s handmade and you can taste the lineage. Open Tue–Sat.
Upper Park Cafe. Downtown Aubrey’s breakfast-and-brunch corner on Main Street. The pecan coffee is the thing people actually talk about. Doors open early and close by mid-afternoon, so it’s a morning plan.
Over Yonder. “If it ain’t great… we ain’t got it.” Scratch cooking on US-377 in Pilot Point — burgers, fried okra, and a homemade cobbler worth saving room for. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday, so plan around it.
None of these are on any tourist list. That’s kind of the point.
